Feasting on the Word – Worship Companion (Volume 2) to be released soon!

Dear Readers:
I hope you all have enjoyed the “teasers” of the Feasting on the Word – Worship Companion that I have been posting on my blog. This is a tremendous resource that I cannot recommend enough! I will only be posting liturgy from Feasting on the Word for the next few weeks (until Easter) so I hope that you all will purchase a copy for yourselves.

The current volume provides liturgy up to Pentecost of this year. The next volume (which will take us from Trinity Sunday to Reign of Christ – Year C) is coming out in a few weeks. You can purchase it here. Volume 1 can be purchased here.

You should note that the hard copy also comes with a CD containing a digital edition of its contents for ease of transferring liturgy to bulletins. Also, Kindle editions of both volumes are available via Amazon.

Again, I hope you have enjoyed the teasers. Take care!

Grace and peace,
Stephen

Prayer of Confession (1) | Fifth Sunday in Lent (Year C)

From Feasting on the Word – Worship Companion, edited by Kimberly Bracken Long.

Purifying God,
we grow comfortable with the way things are
in our lives, in the church, and in the world.
We do not always welcome the new life you offer in Christ,
for you overturn our notions of power and protocol.
Sure of our own righteousness, we are critical of others.
Wanting to control our assets,
we hoard the gifts you give us.
Forgive us, we pray, for seeking our gain at the expense of others.
Help us bend our lives toward your own life of self-giving and sacrifice.
Fill us, our homes and churches, the whole world,
with the abundant love of Christ until all are made new.
In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.

Prayer for Illumination (1) | Easter Sunday (Year C)

From Feasting on the Word – Worship Companion, edited by Kimberly Bracken Long.

Living God, by your Holy Spirit,
open our eyes to see the new light of this day;
open our lips to tell of the empty tomb;
open our hearts to believe the good news;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of Confession (1) | Maundy Thursday (Year C)

From Feasting on the Word – Worship Companion, edited by Kimberly Bracken Long.

[allow a lengthy silence between biddings.]

Holy and gracious God,
our sin is too heavy to bear.
Trusting in your mercy,
we lay before you the truth of who we are.

We confess our failure to love as Christ loved…

We confess our covetousness and greed…

We confess our weakness before temptation…

We confess our frailty before the challenges of this world…

Merciful God, forgive us.
Heal us, and make us whole,
for the sake of your Son, our Savior,
Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Confession | Good Friday (Year C)

From Feasting on the Word – Worship Companion, edited by Kimberly Bracken Long.

Christ Jesus was despised and rejected.
We thought nothing of him.
He was oppressed and afflicted.
We hid our faces from him.
He bore our sickness and sin.
We believed God was punishing him.
We, like sheep, have gone astray.
Yet he, like a lamb, was led to the slaughter.
[silent confession]
Lamb of God, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, grant us peace. Amen.

Call to Worship (1) | Fifth Sunday in Lent (Year C)

From Feasting on the Word – Worship Companion, edited by Kimberly Bracken Long.

As people formed by God, we give praise to God:
Dry ground in the sea,
rivers in the desert,
Christ among us –
God is doing a new thing!

As people restored by God, we give praise to God:
Dry ground in the sea,
rivers in the desert,
Christ among us –
God is doing a new thing!

As people pressing on in faith, we give praise to God:
Dry ground in the sea,
rivers in the desert,
Christ among us –
God is doing a new thing!

Prayer of Confession (4) | Fourth Sunday in Lent (Year C)

From Feasting on the Word – Worship Companion, edited by Kimberly Bracken Long.

Merciful God,
we confess that we have strayed from your ways.
Like the Prodigal Son, we have wasted our inheritance.
You gave us the earth for our home,
but we squander earth’s resources and hoard its bounty.
You gave us neighbors to love, but we pursue selfish ambitions.
You gave us the commandments that lead to human flourishing,
but we break your law and forsake your love.
Forgive us our sin and bring us to repentance.
Draw our wandering hearts back to you
that we may find freedom in obedience to your love.
Through Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.
